Friday evening: fire lit, wine cold, stars out. Saturday: game drive at dawn, braai by noon, hot tub by dark. Sunday: slow breakfast, one last walk, back to reality — but different.
This is what a Shona weekend looks like
Where the bush
sets the rhythm
Leave behind the noise of traffic and deadlines. At Rupping Bush Retreats, your days are shaped by birdsong at dawn, a cold drink by the boma at dusk, and a sky full of stars that reminds you what truly matters.
Nestled inside the Shona Langa Nature Estate in Limpopo — a private, owner-hosted retreat for couples, small families, and anyone who simply needs to exhale. Giraffe and kudu roam freely. The pace here is different. Intentionally so.

A private lodge in the
heart of the Waterberg
Rupping Bush Retreats is a private, self-catering bush lodge situated inside Shona Langa Nature Estate — a 2,000-hectare malaria-free game estate near Thabazimbi in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The property is owner-hosted by Mariska Rupping and accommodates up to 4 guests in two fully furnished bedrooms.
The lodge is approximately 2.5 hours from Johannesburg and 90 minutes from Pretoria, making it one of the most accessible private bush retreats in the Waterberg region. The route is mostly tar road, with approximately 9 km of maintained gravel at the end — suitable for any standard vehicle.
The estate is home to giraffe, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, impala, and over 200 bird species. There are no dangerous animals, making it ideal for families with children who want to experience the bush safely and freely.
The lodge — named Shona — includes a wood-fired hot tub, private boma and braai, fully equipped self-catering kitchen, two bathrooms (one shower, one bath), air conditioning in every room, free WiFi, DSTV, and a dedicated game viewing vehicle. All of these are included in the nightly rate with no hidden extras.
Rates start from R2,650 per night on weekdays and R3,150 per night on weekends. A minimum 2-night stay applies over weekends. There is no breakage deposit and no booking fee when reserving directly.
Nearby attractions include the Marakele National Park, Zebula Golf Estate, Bela-Bela hot springs, and the wider Thabazimbi district — one of Limpopo's most visited game and leisure destinations.
